Twin Cam 88
Sometimes less is MORE!!
We are partial to this engine and use it in most of our projects. The stock 4 inch stroke is ideal for power output and longevity. The Harley world has been tossing the word "stroker" around for so long that sometimes we think people forget engine basics. A 4" stroke in the Chevrolet world is a big block...an engine associated with massive torque, such as the 454 and 502 examples. We won't go any further into the technical side of this but, trust us, that you can mke BIG power without increasing the stroke.
The bore increases in these kits are as far as you can go without pulling the engine and, therefore, are a great value for the money. The larger bore allows the heads to be modified with larger valves and still not be shrouded by the cylinder wall, which really helps breathing.
STAGE 1: If you choose stage 1 and increase the cubic inches without any other changes you will see an increase in low speed torque and minimal gains in horsepower. That is not all bad, since most of your actual cruising is done here. Your cylinders are bored then torque plate finished on a Sunnen SV10 diamond hone.
STAGE 2: This package is designed to include the needed parts to bring your bike performance to a really enjoyable level without backing yourself into a corner for future gains. Axtell reconditions your heads using a Black Diamond Valve with a larger 1.900 intake for added flow. The heads are surfaced to pull the chamber size down to 81 cc and provide 10-1 compression with a flattop piston. Hi-lft springs are set up for the cam lift and the head is ready to go!!
CARBED ENGINES: The Mikuni carb is our choice to feed this combo and the 45 will give great bottom end power and the flow to feed the higher rpms. This carb will allow you to grow your engine size later, if you choose, and still fill the bill! A Daytona twin tech ignition is included, which will allow tuning adjustments to be made externally or with the use of a custom map. We at Axtell use this ignition on all of our carbed T-C bikes, including our Bonneville record setter.
FI ENGINES: Zippers Thundermax with autotune is included in your kits. Axtell has extensive experience with this controller and help with map selection and final tuning.
The Andrews 54 cam that is supplied with these kits has been tested on our dyno and pulls from 2000 to 5500 rpms.
The pushrods we include are super stiff and are not the long adjuster-type that "install easily". Those types have a little too much flex for our taste and, considering you are into the engine anyway, why not use the best?!? One of the advantages of the shorter stroke is the ability to rev, so these heavy duty pushrods are needed.
Set up at .035 squish, this kit gives 10 to 1 and 185 lbs cranking compression. Great power from 2200-6000 rpms!!
STAGE 3: At this point, we decided to "kick it up a notch". We will modify the combustion chamber for our "Mountain Motor" piston design. This will allow aggressive tuning without detonation and really unleash power.Combined with Baisley portwork, this package really performs. We have worked with Baisley High-Performance for over 30 years. From the street to the drag strip, and even Bonneville, they can't be beat! Their work is impeccable and if you're the type to check valve seat concentricity (and we are!!), it's easy to tell the difference between a $400.00 job and theirs. Larger valves are used on both ides 1.90 (+.095) and 1.630 (+.050). High lift springs, new guides, and seals round out the port job.
Cam selection will be done when the order is placed and will be influenced by rider desires and bike model.
The compression ratio is 10 to 1 and cranking compression will depend on cam selection.
This combo will produce 110-120 HP and 105-115 TQ with good street manners.
